What our parents want us to know

Midnight chats, long distance video and phone calls – that’s how we talk. I’ve spent four years communicating with my parents who are away from me. I once thought that living independently while my parents are working abroad would make my life happy and exciting. I was wrong. I long for their affection every single day.

I’m only able to spend a month of laughter and adventure with them during their work vacation once a year. But a month is never long enough to make up for the other months I’ve wanted to see them. Questions bombard my head, “Why can’t they work and live in our place instead? How can they endure months of being away as a family?” Then I’ve realized that our parents’ love is always greater than the distance that separates us.

They only want what’s best for us.

We are our parent’s #1 priority. They give us our needs and the things that they know are right for us. Even if it means paying expensive college fees or other things that we need, they will do it, because they know that education is important for us. They would always want a better future for us. Our parents never want us to settle for less. So, in return, strive hard and aim high!

They know us more than anyone could (even more than our lovers).

If we’re away from them, that doesn’t mean they know us less. Let us remember that we came from our mother’s womb and the blood that runs in our bodies came from the love between our parents. They know us from the way we drool when we were sleeping as kids, the way we dance and talk to ourselves while we were alone in the room, even the way we think and speak. They know every detail of us, simply because we are their children.

They’re hurt twice than we feel.

No parents would ever want to see their child in pain. At times when we feel sad, our parents would probably do anything to bring back the bright smile on our faces. Because when we feel miserable, our parents feel our pain twice or, sometimes, even more. This only shows that our parents will never leave our side even in our greatest failure. They will see us through every pain and remain on our side.

They care.

Yes, they do! Always. They care to know how our studies are going, what plans we have for summer, our ideal guy/girl, etc. They care if we’re sick or if the weather in our place is getting worse. They care if we eat plenty and if we still care for ourselves. They care. This is one thing we can’t deny our parents of doing. Whatever happens, they will always care for us.

They love you unconditionally.

Whatever we do, they forgive, love and accept us wholeheartedly. If there are times that they fight with us or scold us, remember that they want us to become better persons, to be matured enough in making decisions for ourselves. They do this because they love us. We are their beloved, and that will never change. They will continually care, love, nurture and fight for us until their very last breath. That is how blessed we are in having them.

We all have different situations with how we live with our parents, either they are physically with us or away from us. We will never know all the things they’ve sacrificed and will be sacrificing for us. But what we do know is that they will be willing to work hard just for us to experience a more abundant life than what they had. They’re giving and will continue to give us the best gift that they could ever give – love. And this gift of love should not stop with us. We are meant to share this gift to everyone, allowing more people to see how much of a blessing it is to have parents.

Let us not let the moment come to pass. Let’s thank our parents as often as we can. They are one of the greatest blessings we will ever have.
