The constant in our changes

Our mom is the best mom in the world.

As cliché as it may be, we still hear our friends or strangers use this phrase when they speak proudly of their mothers. We certainly look up to our mothers in a pedestal, hoping to follow their footsteps someday. Yet, how can one actually define what a mother is? How do we completely portray such a great person when words are clearly not enough to encompass the blessing of having the best mom in the world?

Mother’s Day only comes once a year, and though we can make our mothers feel special everyday, let us take this time to honor them.

Our mother’s story may be quite similar or different from yours, but these five qualities of hers make us believe how great she is in taking on the role of a mother to her two daughters:

1. A source of unconditional love and unity in the family.

Our mom always made sure that we live in a home full of happiness and love. We may not have come from a very rich family, but we can definitely say that we are rich in love. As her daughters, we have continually viewed our family as an ideal household. Despite our father’s death when we were teenagers, our mom never gave up on us even though she was faced with such a huge responsibility of being both a mother and a father. We had her to lean on and gain our strength from. Her patience is endless. We can definitely say that we still miss our dad but we were able to overcome our grief and move on – all because of a strong woman rooted in faith, hope, and love.

2. A good bearer of advice.

Most of our friends would say that opening up to one’s parents about their problems could feel awkward. On the contrary, we feel that opening up to our mom feels enjoyable rather than awkward. She is neither authoritarian nor persuasive, but authoritative in nature. She gives good advice and guides us but never imposes. She still lets us have the freedom to make some life choices. Even if there are times that we do not understand, we respect her views and let her guide us as we journey through our own decisions. She “lovingly corrects” and gives constructive criticism because she only wants what is best for us. She will stand by us and encourage us to dream high so long as we would not trample on others or disrespect God in any way.

3. An amazing cook wanna-be.

They say that the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Perhaps, we could say the same to a mother who strives to find her way into her family’s stomach. In our family’s case, it was different. This has always been a struggle for mom as she does not know how to cook. She is blessed to have married our father whom we could consider as such a good cook. So, when our dad died, she did everything she can to prepare a nice meal for us everyday. Whatever the food was, we could guarantee that each family mealtime was filled with stories and laughter.

4. A role model to her children.

What better way to learn values than to see our mother apply such values herself? She is not perfect but made perfect because of her “beautiful flaws” that make her the unique person that she truly is. We aspire to be like her when we become mothers ourselves because she has set such high standards on how a good mother should be.

5. Her children’s constant prayer warrior.

We could not help but compare our mother to Mama Mary who loves her son so much. Our mother would always pray the Holy Rosary for us most especially when we are out of her sight. We believe that having a mother as a prayer warrior works wondrous ways in our lives. She strives to bring her children closer to God by showing us how important prayer is. Being a family of faith, we feel blessed even more. After all, “a family that prays together stays together.”

The Lord’s second greatest commandment says, “Love your neighbour as I have loved you.” This is best exemplified by our mom through her undying and sacrificial love for us.

So, to our beloved mom, you will forever be the precious woman that we hold dearest in our hearts. We honor and thank you for your limitless effort to become the best mother that you truly are. We owe to you who we are right now and we are very proud of you as your daughters. We will also be your constant prayer warriors. You are God’s greatest gift to us and may you always remember that we love you so much.

Happy Mother’s Day!
